How do you create good meta descriptions?Make different descriptions for different pages
Do not use the same or similar descriptions for every page because it is not helpful when a person sees the same description for many pages.
Write meta descriptions that describe each specific page uniquely. Site level descriptions on the main home page are fine, but should be different for other pages, You should prioritize parts of your site if you don't have time to create a description for every single page and create a unique description for the critical paes.
Include clearly tagged facts in the descriptionThe meta description doesn't just have to be a complete sentence. It can include structured data about the page (meta-meta data). A blog posting, for example, may list the author, byline or date of publication. This can give visitors relevant information that may not be displayed in the snippet. Likewise, product pages may have -- price, specs., sizes, manufacturer. Meta descriptions can be used as a summary.
Here are a few reasons a meta description would not work as a snippet:
- The title of a product is a complete duplication of content already in the page title
- Information within the description itself is duplicated
- The information in the description is not clearly identified
- Missing spacing and overuse of punctuation (i.e. colons, dashes, commas) makes it hard to read.
An average person scanning a results page
may spend under a second on any given snippet will skip a result if not formed correctly.
Use effective descriptions
Make your descriptions... descriptive. Don't be lazy on the quality of your meta descriptions. They may not
be directly visible in your site, but meta
descriptions may be displayed in Google search results -- the
description sells a visitor to click the result. A bit more effort will go a long way to generate clicks to your site.
